Messina is Sicily's northeastern port and the cruise access point to Mount Etna (90 minutes south) and Taormina (45 minutes south). The town itself was largely destroyed in a 1908 earthquake and rebuilt in a less-charming modern style; most cruisers leave Messina to see Sicily's real attractions.
Mount Etna is one of the world's most active volcanoes and visible from the cruise pier on clear days. Taormina's Greek theater and clifftop village are the alternative if you don't want to go up a smoking mountain.
The activities Disney cruise families consistently rate highest, ranked by popularity and quality, not by what an excursion desk wants to sell.

A clifftop village with the famous Greek Theater overlooking Etna and the sea. Pretty old town, shopping, and beach access.
Best for: Cultural full-day
A pretty Sicilian seaside town with a UNESCO-listed Norman cathedral and a wide sandy beach.
Best for: Beach and culture combo
The Messina Cathedral with its astronomical clock that performs at noon, plus the seafront promenade. Quick half-day option.
Best for: Easy half-day
Etna and Taormina are worth Disney excursions — both are far from the pier and tight on timing. The Messina city walk works as a budget DIY morning.
$199 per person
Coach to Etna, cable car ride to upper craters, lunch.
Bring layers — it's cold at 8,000+ feet even in summer.
$129 per person
Coach to Taormina, Greek Theater visit, free time in the village, return.
The Greek Theater is the iconic photo — sunset is ideal but cruise schedules rarely permit.
Local spots and notable bites worth leaving the ship for — or that work well as a quick shore-side break.
📍 Messina center
A classic Sicilian trattoria — pasta alla Norma, swordfish involtini, granita.
📍 Taormina
Sicily's famous granita (semi-frozen flavored ice) shop. Coffee or almond granita with a warm brioche is the local breakfast.
Things that make a real difference with little kids on a port day.
Mount Etna's cable car has a weight/age minimum — check with the operator before booking.
Taormina is very walkable but on a clifftop — small kids may struggle with the stairs.
Sicilian summer heat is intense — pack water and hats.
Money-saving and time-saving tricks most cruisers learn the hard way.
💡 Etna 4x4 tours add real adventure
For older kids, the optional 4x4 segment to higher Etna craters is dramatic. Add-on to the standard cable car tour.
💡 Granita is breakfast
Sicilian granita with brioche is the traditional breakfast — much better than American take on flavored ice.
