Genoa is Italy's largest seaport and Christopher Columbus' birthplace. The cruise terminal is right at the harbor, walking distance from the medieval old town with the narrowest streets in Europe (the caruggi). For day trips, the Cinque Terre national park is 90 minutes south, Portofino 30 minutes, and Milan 90 minutes by train.
Most cruisers skip the old town and head straight for the Cinque Terre or Portofino. Genoa itself rewards travelers who like genuinely lived-in Italian cities — chaotic, working harbor, and the focaccia is excellent.
The activities Disney cruise families consistently rate highest, ranked by popularity and quality, not by what an excursion desk wants to sell.

Cinque Terre and Portofino are worth Disney excursions — independent transit works but is awkward and time-sensitive. Genoa town is easy DIY.
$215 per person
Coach + train + walking tour of 2-3 of the five villages. Disney guarantees return.
Wear sturdy shoes — the villages have steep stairs and uneven paths.
€27 aquarium + lunch
Walk to the aquarium, lunch in the old town, focaccia from a Genoese bakery.
Genoese focaccia is the original — buy it from any "Panificio" not a tourist shop.
Local spots and notable bites worth leaving the ship for — or that work well as a quick shore-side break.
📍 Old Town
A 100-year-old focaccia shop. Cheap, perfect for a stand-up lunch.
📍 Old Town
A classic Ligurian trattoria — pasta with pesto (invented in Genoa), trofie, and seafood.
Things that make a real difference with little kids on a port day.
Cinque Terre involves a lot of steps and inclines — not stroller-friendly.
Genoa pickpockets work the train station — keep wallets secured on the way to Cinque Terre.
Pesto in Genoa is a different experience from the supermarket version — try a "pasta al pesto" at a local trattoria.
Money-saving and time-saving tricks most cruisers learn the hard way.
💡 Boccadasse fishing village
A colorful fishing village within Genoa city limits — accessible by city bus and dramatically less crowded than Cinque Terre.
💡 Real pesto vs supermarket
Genoa's pesto uses small-leaf basil, pine nuts, parmigiano, and pecorino — buy fresh from a market, not jarred.
