Sitka was the capital of Russian America until 1867 — onion-dome churches, Russian-era buildings, and a uniquely mixed Tlingit-Russian-American cultural heritage. Disney ships tender into the harbor a short shuttle from downtown.
The town's walkable old downtown, the Sitka National Historical Park (totem-pole forest trails), and the Alaska Raptor Center (where rehabilitating bald eagles are visible at close range) form the best half-day combo in Alaska.
The activities Disney cruise families consistently rate highest, ranked by popularity and quality, not by what an excursion desk wants to sell.

Best for: Wildlife families
Sitka's downtown attractions are walkable, so DIY works well for most cruisers. The Sea Otter Quest and the longer Fortress of the Bear tours are where Disney excursions pay off.

The Raptor Center is one of the best kid-focused stops on any Alaska itinerary.
Sitka rains often — pack waterproof layers and shoes.
Money-saving and time-saving tricks most cruisers learn the hard way.
💡 Fortress of the Bear
A rescue facility for orphaned brown bears, 5 miles from town. Smaller crowds than the Raptor Center and a less-common Alaska experience.
💡 Free downtown shuttle
A free shuttle bus loops from the tender dock through downtown — useful if rain makes walking unpleasant.
Sitka's weather is cooler and wetter than mainland Alaska ports. June and September are slightly drier; July and August are warmest.
