Most Disney sailings to the Dominican Republic dock at Amber Cove, a Carnival-owned cruise complex about 8 miles west of Puerto Plata. The pier complex includes pools, zip lines, a beach club, restaurants, and a controlled-experience feel — many families never leave the gates and have a perfectly good day.
The Puerto Plata region itself offers more variety than a single port day can cover — a cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, a colonial-era fort, the kitesurf town of Cabarete, and several proper beach resorts. Anyone who likes the look of Dominican mountains over a pool complex should leave the gates.
