Almost every Disney cruise guide assumes you are flying to Orlando. If you live west of the Rockies, that assumption costs you a travel day in each direction and a flight that is rarely cheap. Which is why a Disney cruise from San Diego deserves a closer look than it gets — and why this season is the best West Coast calendar Disney has offered in years.
Both classic ships are out here. The Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder are working San Diego from October 2026 through early May 2027, with 3- through 14-night options on the schedule. Here is how the itineraries differ, what they cost, and how to pick a length.
Which Ships Sail from San Diego This Season
The season runs on the two original ships rather than the newer Wish-class vessels, and the trade-off is worth naming up front: no AquaMouse water coaster, no Marvel lounge. What you get instead is a smaller ship — roughly 2,700 guests instead of 4,000 — with shorter lines, faster tendering, and the Broadway-caliber shows that built Disney Cruise Line's reputation.
The Disney Wonder carries most of the schedule, and she arrives fresh: a two-week dry dock in Victoria, British Columbia in late summer 2026 covered more than a hundred projects — twelve miles of new carpet, a rebuilt Edge tween club, repainted hull, reconditioned stern statues. If you remember the Wonder showing its age, that is not the ship you would board now. The Disney Magic splits the season with her, taking several of the longer Mexican Riviera runs and the repositioning sailings at either end.
The Four Itineraries on a Disney Cruise from San Diego
The schedule is not a grab bag — four core itineraries on rotation, plus two repositioning oddities. Pick the shape of the trip first, dates second.
3-Night Baja: San Diego → Ensenada → San Diego
The shortest option and the most-sold: one port call in Ensenada, one sea day, home Sunday. The sampler — right if you want to learn whether rotational dining and the character programming land with your kids before committing a week to it.
4-Night Baja: Catalina Island and Ensenada
The sweet spot of the whole season. One extra night adds Catalina Island, a tender port with nothing like it on a Caribbean itinerary: Avalon's harbor is walkable straight off the tender and the snorkeling at Lover's Cove is legitimately good. Pay for the extra night.
5- and 6-Night Mexican Riviera: Cabo San Lucas
Here the itinerary stops being a weekend and becomes a vacation. These runs swap in Cabo San Lucas, the best port on the West Coast schedule: El Arco, the sea lion colony, Medano Beach, and a tender ride worth being on deck for. The 6-night adds a second sea day, which on a smaller ship with good adult spaces is a feature, not filler.
7-Night Mexican Riviera: Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, and Ensenada
Three ports and the only itinerary out here that reaches Puerto Vallarta. It also has the most sea-day breathing room, which matters more than people expect: on a 3-night run, your single sea day absorbs the spa, the adult brunch, the character meets and the show you missed. On seven nights, nothing competes.
The two outliers worth knowing about
A 4-night Pacific Coast repositioning run goes San Diego to Vancouver at season's end, feeding the Alaska summer. And on November 6, 2026, the Magic runs a 14-night eastbound Panama Canal crossing to Galveston via Cabo, Cartagena and Grand Cayman — there is exactly one, and it will not repeat.
What a Disney Cruise from San Diego Costs
West Coast sailings price softer than the Florida schedule as a rule — fewer families chase them, and the private-island draw does not apply. Across the sailings in our index this season:
- 3-night Baja: inside staterooms have been listed from about $1,180, with the busier weeks pushing past $1,900.
- 4-night Baja: from about $1,140 at the low end — which is the quiet headline here, because the 4-night sometimes prices below the 3-night depending on the week.
- 5- and 6-night Mexican Riviera: generally $1,350 to $2,250.
- 7-night Mexican Riviera: from about $2,100, up to around $5,100 over the holidays.
Those are stateroom totals for the lowest category available when we last captured each sailing, and they move constantly — check live numbers on our sailings page. The real arbitrage: compare the 3-night and 4-night departures in the same week. They are often within a hundred dollars, and the 4-night adds Catalina. For what sits on top of the fare, our Disney cruise cost guide builds a realistic all-in number.
Getting to the Terminal
San Diego is the easiest major cruise port in the country to reach, and it is not close. The B Street Cruise Ship Terminal sits on the downtown Embarcadero about three miles from San Diego International — a ten-minute rideshare, against the Orlando-to-Port-Canaveral haul. A pre-cruise night downtown becomes a pleasure rather than a logistics tax, with the Gaslamp Quarter, the USS Midway and Little Italy all walkable. Our San Diego port guide covers parking, terminal logistics and what to do with an extra day.
One document note: every San Diego sailing calls in Mexico. Closed-loop sailings can generally be done with a passport card or a birth certificate plus photo ID for U.S. citizens, but a passport book is the only document that covers you cleanly if you have to fly home from Mexico — and it is required outright on the Panama Canal and Vancouver sailings.
Who Should Sail West Coast Instead of Florida
Choose San Diego if: the flight math is obvious from where you live; you want a short trip with a real port rather than a sea day; you prefer a smaller ship with shorter lines; or Catalina and Cabo appeal more than another Nassau day.
Choose Florida if: Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay is the point — Disney's private islands are the one thing the West Coast schedule cannot offer; you want a Wish-class ship; or your group needs a 7-night Caribbean run with more beach days.
One more angle: the season overlaps the holidays, and the Wonder gets the full seasonal overlay from November. Our Very Merrytime cruises 2026 guide explains which weeks get the decorations without the Christmas-week fare — early-November Baja out of San Diego is one of the better value plays in the fleet.
The Bottom Line
A Disney cruise from San Diego is the most underrated corner of the calendar: two refreshed classic ships, four distinct itineraries, a terminal ten minutes from the airport, and fares that generally run below the Florida equivalents. Start with the 4-night Baja run for Catalina; graduate to the 7-night Mexican Riviera.
Two things to read before you commit: our onboard credit guide, and our Disney cruise packing list — Baja in December is not Caribbean weather, and people pack for the wrong ocean constantly.
