Olden is a tiny Norwegian village at the inner end of Nordfjord — population about 500. Disney ships dock at a small pier in front of a handful of wooden buildings. There's no city to explore; the entire point of Olden is the surrounding glacier country.
Briksdal Glacier (an arm of Jostedalsbreen, mainland Europe's largest glacier) is a 15-minute drive inland and the headline excursion. The Loen Skylift, a steep gondola straight up the fjord wall to a clifftop viewpoint, has emerged as a popular alternative for families with mobility limits.
The activities Disney cruise families consistently rate highest, ranked by popularity and quality, not by what an excursion desk wants to sell.

A steep gondola from Loen up Mount Hoven, 1,011 meters above the fjord. Restaurant, viewing platform, hiking trails at the top.
Best for: Mobility-limited families
A small 18th-century wooden church and adjacent stave-style new church in the village.
Best for: Quick stop
Open-top "troll cars" (golf carts) replace the walk from parking to the glacier — for families that can't walk the gravel path.
Best for: Families with mobility limits or small kids
Olden is one of the few ports where Disney excursions are essentially required — there's no public transit and few independent operators at the pier. Even DIY Loen Skylift requires a taxi ride.

Bus to the trailhead, 1-hour glacier walk with guide. Disney holds the ship.
Wear waterproof shoes — the trail is wet and the air around the glacier mists.
$135 per person
Bus to Loen, gondola ride, top-station lunch break, return.
The top has restaurants and short walking trails — plan 2 hours up there.
Local spots and notable bites worth leaving the ship for — or that work well as a quick shore-side break.
📍 Briksdal trailhead
The trailhead lodge has a Norwegian-style buffet lunch — included in most Disney glacier excursions.
📍 Mount Hoven top station
A clifftop restaurant with traditional Norwegian dishes and the most dramatic dining view in Norway.
Things that make a real difference with little kids on a port day.
The pier is at the dead end of the fjord — there's no "town walking" option here, just the excursion.
Briksdal trail is gravel and stroller-passable but uneven — a baby carrier is easier.
The glacier face has retreated significantly in recent years; the lake walk now starts farther from the visible ice.
Money-saving and time-saving tricks most cruisers learn the hard way.
💡 The glacier is shrinking
Briksdal Glacier has retreated about a kilometer since 1990. The current viewpoint is from a lake formed by the retreat. Bring binoculars to see the ice face clearly.
💡 Lake Loen kayaking
For active families, the calm Lake Loen offers cheap kayak rentals — a quieter alternative to the standard glacier trip.
Olden's cruise season is June–August. Even peak summer is cool here; pack layers.
| Months | Weather | Crowds |

Norwegian fjords are reliably scenic in summer but rain is common. Daily highs in cruise season run 55–70°F.
Most Norwegian cruise ports have walkable old towns within a 15-minute flat walk of the pier.
Norwegian taxis are expensive but reliable and most accept credit cards.
Cheap and frequent; pay with credit card or contactless on most buses.
