Greenock is a small Scottish port on the Firth of Clyde, 45 minutes west of Glasgow and 90 minutes from Edinburgh. The pier itself has very little — most cruisers use Greenock entirely as a launchpad for one of the two cities or the Loch Lomond country in between.
The choice between Glasgow and Edinburgh is the headline decision of any Greenock port day. Edinburgh has the castle and the Royal Mile; Glasgow has the museums, Charles Rennie Mackintosh architecture, and a more urban-Scottish feel. Most cruisers pick one or the other — doing both is theoretically possible but exhausting.
The activities Disney cruise families consistently rate highest, ranked by popularity and quality, not by what an excursion desk wants to sell.
Edinburgh's castle on volcanic rock, the Royal Mile down to Holyroodhouse, lunch, free time in the old town.
Best for: First-time Scotland visitors
Glasgow Cathedral, the Necropolis, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, George Square. Less crowded than Edinburgh.
Best for: Cultural travelers
Scenic drive into the southern Highlands, with loch views and a small ferry across Loch Lomond. Pretty alternative to a city day.
Best for: Nature families
The pier is at the end of a small town with a few shops, the Custom House (Robert Burns connection), and the McLean Museum.
Best for: Light port day option
The Edinburgh excursion is genuinely worth its premium — a 3-hour total drive each way is hard to DIY in a port day. For Glasgow, the train from nearby Greenock or Port Glasgow is cheaper and easy.

A historic Royal Mile restaurant in a gothic dining room. Memorable atmosphere; book ahead.
Things that make a real difference with little kids on a port day.
Edinburgh and Glasgow are both walkable but have hills — kids who don't want to walk a lot will struggle.
Scottish pubs welcome kids during daytime — kid menus and family rooms are standard.
Pack rain gear regardless of forecast.
Money-saving and time-saving tricks most cruisers learn the hard way.
💡 Edinburgh military tattoo
If your cruise hits Greenock in August, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (military pageant at the castle) is a unique experience. Tickets sell out months ahead.
💡 Mackintosh in Glasgow
Glasgow's Charles Rennie Mackintosh architecture (Glasgow School of Art, Hill House, Willow Tea Rooms) is a unique Art Nouveau / Scottish hybrid not found elsewhere.
Scottish cruise season runs May through September. June and July are warmest and longest daylight. May and September are quieter with cooler weather.
